How MojiWords works
MojiWords is a free website where children aged 5 to 12 learn English words. It is made for kids whose first language is not English. Every deck is one list of words on a topic, like animals, food, or school. Each word has an emoji picture instead of a stock photo, a translation into the children's own language, such as Spanish, Polish, or Japanese, and its phonetic spelling. Most words are spoken by real people in American English, so children learn how words sound, not only how they look.
Free to play, no account needed
Pick a deck on this page and start playing online right away, with no download. There is no account and no app for your child, nothing stored about your child, and no ads. The stars they earn stay in the browser on their own device. The buttons are big and the pictures do the talking, so even children who cannot read yet can play on a phone, a tablet or iPad, or a laptop. A new deck is added every day.
Ways to play
- Flash cards Interactive flash cards with real pronunciation. Tap a card to flip it: one side shows the word in the children's language with its picture, the other shows the English word and says it out loud.
- Drag and drop A drag-and-drop matching game: drag each picture onto the matching English word. A correct match speaks the word, so meaning and sound are learned together.
- Quiz Coming soon: hear or see a word and pick the right answer from four choices, then a screen full of stars.
Mistakes are never punished. There is no red X and no timer, only a gentle "try again" and a happy sound when the answer is right.
Make your own deck in a minute
Parents, teachers, and learners can create decks. Press "Create your own", paste a list of words in English or in the children's language, and choose the children's language. MojiWords translates every word, adds an emoji picture and the pronunciation, and checks the whole list to make sure it is suitable for children before anything is published. You review the result, remove any word you do not want, and publish. Your deck gets its own link to share with your family or class, and it appears on this page for everyone to play. Signing in with Google is needed only to create a deck.
